New Zealand National Film Unit presents Pictorial Parade No. 24 (1954)
On 23 July 1952, New Zealand's first female Olympic medallist, Yvette Williams (now Corlett) won gold in the long jump with an Olympic-record leap of 6.24m.
"Those watching at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki or listening back home had an anxious wait" writes nzhistory.net.nz. "After leading the qualifying round with a jump of 6.16m, in the final she recorded two no-jumps in a row. With only one more chance to stay in the competition, she leaped 5.90m on her third jump to make the top six and earn a crucial three extra jumps. Williams' fourth jump was perfect. At 6.24m, it was just 1 cm short of the world record held by Francine ('Fanny') Blankers-Koen of the Netherlands. Williams had set a new Olympic record and won gold for New Zealand." Two years later, at an athletics meeting in Gisborne, Williams broke world record with a jump of 6.29m. It stood for another 18 months.
Williams was inducted into the New Zealand Hall of Fame in 1990, and in 2000 she was voted Otago Sportsperson of the Century.
Williams then attended the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Olympics in 2002, where she received an ovation from the crowd in honour of her gold medal win.
This National Film Unit clip shows Williams and other athletes training prior to the Vancouver Empire Games of 1954 (Williams can be seen at 1:38). The National Film Unit was established to publicise New Zealand's participation and achievements during the Second World War. After 1945 the Film Unit expanded from producing weekly newsreels to making documentaries and films to the order of Government Departments. During its existence the Film Unit produced films for national organisations as well as many films on its own initiative.
