The first of March is National Pig Day in the United States. According to Mary Lynne Rave, one of the founders of National Pig Day, the occasion accords "the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals." However, whether the holiday is a time to honour pigs or "to appreciate their offerings (spare ribs, bacon and ham)" is an open question for some.
To celebrate National Pig Day, we've chosen a 1957 compilation of National Film Unit movies called 'Animal Novelties' featuring - you guessed it - pigs. Watch as a Napier pig goes swimming with a friend, and experience "an amusing interview with a sow and her record litter of piglets."
